Immigration Law Resources: Home

About this Guide

Scope

Immigration law is a complicated subject with different agencies and courts handling different aspects of the legal system.  This guide is meant to cover basic Immigration law research.

Specialized topics such as asylum, children, work visas, and family visas have resources that focus on just those topics.  The general resources listed here may well have information about those specialized topics, but will also include other topics.

Primary Sources

In legal research, Primary sources are the actual laws/rules themselves.  Primary sources for Immigration include:

  • Statutes and Regulations,
  • Judicial and Administrative Court Cases, and interestingly,
  • Administrative Guidance and Manuals.

Secondary Sources

Secondary sources are resources that talk about the laws.  They are very important because the laws can be hard to find and understand without the secondary sources.

Who is this guide for?

This guide is intended for law students, but anyone interested in the topic of immigration law may find some useful information here.   Some of the information listed here is available through the commercial legal databases, Westlaw, Lexis, and Bloomberg Law.   However, if you do not have a subscription to those databases, many of the resources are also available either free online or through our library.
